    tnsping hangs for a long time

    few days back..i have faced a strange situation in a Prod EBS instance.

    Suddenly the apps tier process(ICM.Std Mgr etc) is going down on each apps node. When debugging found that the database and listener were fine and giving response. but the communication to listener was not going through.

    Issue : tnsping sid was hanging
    Tried : reloading listener and even bounce the listener process.

    Still the tnsping was hanging. Unix box was ping able also the listener port was also not used by any other process.We did not found any error in sqlnet.ora file.
    At unix host level did not see any high CPU etc.nothing found..

    After two hours it's start responding normal but still i am not able to find out the root cause of this issue.

    Instance Configuration :
    Apps: Mutli node shared apps 11i EBS(11.5.10.2) on Linux on 32 bit
    DB : non-RAC 11g(11.1.0.7) on HP-Itanum 64 bit

    Any suggestion? Did i have missed any thing?
    Regards,
    -Amit

    - Pls check what is the value for sqlnet expire time in sqlnet.ora
    Its probably not able to connect so hangs for the duration specified by sqlnet.expire time

    - Please check the listener log for errors ; Also I hope its not an issue with the listener log being 4 GB in size

    - please see that the listener definition has not changed and that the SID you want to connect to is defined in the SID_LIST_<LISTENER_NAME>

    - when you use tnsping ..is it able to resolve the connection identifier in TNS. Is the service name defined in the tns entry same as the sid in the listener.ora
    If not will need to verify the tns entry

    - Is tnsping hanging from the database node or hanging when you use tnsping from apps node.
    If it hangs only from the other node and not from the same node , it coule be a network latency issue.

    Hi Hemant - Thank you for your reply.Here are my comments on your questions..

    Pls check what is the value for sqlnet expire time in sqlnet.ora
    1) From $TNS_ADMIN/sqlnet.ora

    NAMES.REQUEST_RETRIES=2
    NAMES.INITIAL_RETRY_TIMEOUT=10
    # Set below per note 345197.1 to avoid ORA-3136
    SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT = 300

    2) From $TNS_ADMIN/listener.ora

    STARTUP_WAIT_TIME_sid = 0
    CONNECT_TIMEOUT_sid = 10
    TRACE_LEVEL_sid = OFF
    INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_sid = 300

    Please check the listener log for errors ;

    3) listener log does not show any error.

    please see that the listener definition has not changed and that the SID you want to connect to is defined in the
    4)Yes. It has the value

    when you use tnsping ..is it able to resolve the connection identifier in TNS. Is the service name defined in the tns entry same as the sid in the listener.ora
    If not will need to verify the tns entry
    5) It was resolving the conncect identifier using ldap.

    tnsping sid

    Used parameter files:
    /db01/opt/oracle/product/11.1.0_sid/network/admin/sqlnet.ora

    Used LDAP adapter to resolve the alias
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = sid-lsnr-db.tcc.etn.com)(PORT =15178)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = sid)))

    It was hanging on above.

    - Is tnsping hanging from the database node or hanging when you use tnsping from apps node.
    If it hangs only from the other node and not from the same node , it coule be a network latency issue.

    6) It was hanging on both the nodes.DB as well apps node.

    Now the issue does not persist so i cann't dig much in that.But didn't know what caused that.
    Either n/w or some otherthing ??
    Regards,
    -Amit

    Its probably not able to resolve the connection Identifier using the Ldap directory Server.
    At /db01/opt/oracle/product/11.1.0_sid/network/admin location , you should be having an ldap.ora.
    You need to ensure that this file is fine.

    Please verify that the Directory server defined in ldap.ora is reachable , and that you can find the connect string in the ldap using ldap search.

    As an altenative , you can set the NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES,LDAP) in sqlnet.ora to use TNS resolution as the first method of resolution.
    and put the connection identifier definition in tnsnames.ora to use resolution through tns.
