    WebLogic Domain

What is a weblogic server domain?

A domain is the basic administration unit for Weblogic Server instances. A domain consists of an Administration Server and Managed application servers and resources. The main configuration file in the domain is config.xml, which is in the domain directory(where you install your weblogic server domain) under config directory. Weblogic domain can have multiple servers in a cluster or multiple clusters. A domain can have an Administration Server which can act as an Administration Server and managed server.

    Administration Server & Managed Server:
The administration server provides a central point for managing the domain and providing access to the Oracle WebLogic Server administration tools. All other WebLogic Server instances in a domain are called Managed Servers. In a domain with only a single WebLogic Server instance, that server functions both as Administration Server and Managed Server.

It is advisable to deploy your applications only on Managed Servers to dedicate the Administration Server to configuration and monitoring of the domain, while one or more Managed Servers service your applications.

WebLogic Deployment Modes : Weblogic domain can be configured in two different modes:

    1. Development Mode: In the development mode of configuration, Weblogic server domain has minimum security and is used for the development of application purposes. In this mode, you can also auto-deploy the application.

    2. Productions Mode: This is the final mode of the domain configuration, where you deploy the application which will be directly used by the customers. This is a very important environment, with maximum security.

Domains are made based on administrative ease. They can be based on criteria such as:

    Logical divisions of applications.
    Physical location.
    Size.
