    CPU Patches

    Critical Patch Updates(CPU):-
    -------------------------------
    Critical Patch Updates(CPU) are the primary means of releasing security fixes for Oracle products to customers with valid support contracts.
    They are released on the Tuesday closest to the 17th day of January, April, July and October. The next four dates are:

    1) 17 April 2012

    2) 17 July 2012

    3) 16 October 2012

    4) 15 January 2013.


    OR

    Oracle Critical Patch Updates

    Fixes for security bugs in all Oracle products

    – Released quarterly on a fixed schedule

    – Tuesday closest to the 17th day of January, April,
    July and October.


    Security Bug Process:--

    1). Customer or security researcher reports the security bug to Oracle.

    2). Oracle researches bug and develops bug fix.

    3). Oracle may include fix in new releases.

    4). Oracle includes fix in quarterly CPU.



    Types of Oracle Security Bugs:-

    --> Buffer Overflow
    --> SQL Injection
    --> Parameter Tampering
    --> Permission Issues
    --> Information Disclosure.



    There are two approach to apply the patch.

    1)Conventional Approach

    2)New Approach


    Steps for Conventional Approach:-

    1). Shut down the database

    2). Apply patch to the Oracle Home

    3). Start the database

    4). In case of problems:

    4). Shut down the database

    5). Roll back the patch

    6). Start the database


    Steps 2 and 6 could take as much as three or four hours depending on the amount of patching. The database is down during these times.


    Steps for New Approach:-

    1). Install new Oracle Home

    2). Apply the patch to the new Home

    3). Shut down the database

    4). Change Oracle Home to the new location

    5). Start the database

    6). In case of problems:

    7). Shut down the database

    8). Change Oracle Home to the old one

    9). Start the database


    The database is down only during steps 4 and 8, which takes a couple of minutes at the most, not hours.
